Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd and Sumitomo Corp announced Dec 3, 2008, that they introduced their jointly developed unmanned floor cleaning robot system into Sumitomo Building in Osaka City, Japan.
In this system, an autonomous cleaning robot moves between the floors of the office building using elevators and cleans the floor surfaces of corridors and other common spaces. It is operated by Reibi, the company that is in charge of cleaning the building and partially financed by Sumitomo.
The robot used in the system is based on the one that was introduced in Harumi Triton Square in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, in 2001. But the new robot features an enhanced drive motor, more durable power circuits and other improved functions.
Specifically, its safety was enhanced by employing a laser-type range sensor to detect obstacles and improving the signal processing program. In addition, the lifting mechanism of the vacuum device was changed from a motorized system to a manually-operated mechanism with a wire, reducing the cost and weight.
When the robot moves between floors, the light transmission devices installed in the robot and the elevator communicate with each other to open and close the door and indicate the destination. It can be equipped with a camera to record its work. It is possible to check the status of the robot and its surroundings by recording the whole operation on a hard disk.
In the past, Fuji Heavy Industries developed an outdoor cleaning robot for the "Next-Generation Robot Commercialization Project" of Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). And the company demonstrated it at Expo 2005 Aichi Japan in 2005.
Furthermore, taking advantage of the "Service Robot Market Creation Assistance Project" by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the company improved the safety, reliability and maintainability of the robot.
Fuji Heavy Industries and Sumitomo have already introduced this system to Royal Parks Shinden, a rental apartment building in Adachi Ward, Tokyo, and the Sumitomo Shoji Izumi-cho Building in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. In December 2006, the system was awarded the grand prize of METI's "Robot Award 2006."

  • Pole Dancing Robots

The British are known for pushing the boundaries of underground art, but somehow they always manage to offer new surprises. The latest is a troop of pole dancing robots (yes, as in stripper) equipped with CCTV heads. The full-motion robots were recently unveiled at the Mutate Britain, Behind the Shutters Gallery in London. Artist Giles Walker perfectly meshed the UK's new national symbol (the CCTV) with robotics in a way that almost makes their Orwellian future sexy. You can check out the sexed up robots in action here.

  • Motoman SDA10

motoman-sda10-12-02-08.jpg

  • Meet Your Wait-Robot

n_040306_houseRobots.jpg
A U.S. government intelligence agency thinks robots may be so capable by 2025 that questions such as "Would you like fries with that?" may be uttered by a smiling machine at the order counter.
The National Intelligence Council, in a report titled "Global Trends 2025: A Transformed World" that was released last week, offered its long-range strategic thinking about the military and economic challenges the U.S. will face from other countries over the next 17 years, as well as the environmental challenges ahead. The report also looks at technologies, and it includes some sweeping ideas about the future.
IT workers have long been familiar with the ways that advances in automation have reduced the need for people, especially in data centers. By 2025, robotics technology will be far enough along to take over low-skilled jobs, according to the NIC.
That could provide benefits, such as enabling robots to be used to help provide care for the elderly. But the machines also may be far enough along "to disrupt unskilled labor markets," the NIC said, adding that they could also affect immigration patterns by taking over some jobs now performed by migrant workers.
Vendors such as MobileRobots Inc. already are offering products that provide an idea of what the future may look like. Meanwhile, a British artificial intelligence researcher wrote a book last year predicting that humans will fall in love with and even marry robots by 2050.
The NIC's report doesn't address that possibility. But it does say that robotic technologies may be used to augment human capabilities, much like in the 1970s television show The Six Million Dollar Man and its spin-off The Bionic Woman. At the extreme end, the report foresees the possible development of an exoskeleton resembling "a wearable humanoid robot, that uses sensors, interfaces, power systems and actuators to monitor and respond to arm and leg movements, providing the wearer with increased strength and control."
What may be more widespread, the NIC said, are "human cognitive augmentation technologies" -- wearable devices that can help improve vision, hearing and memory.
Separately, the agency also predicted that by 2025, there will be an "Internet of Things" created by the ubiquitous use of radio frequency identification tags on a wide variety of physical items, such as food packages, furniture and paper documents. Such objects will be able to be located, identified, monitored and remotely controlled via the Internet, according to the report.
The vast reservoir of RFID data will be managed on high-performance computers connected together via next-generation Internet technologies, the NIC said. It contended that the trend toward increased use of RFID is inevitable and will be driven by the need to improve supply chain operations and logistics as well as energy efficiency and data security. But privacy concerns will create a big barrier to entry for companies, the agency said.
Other predictions in the report include a belief that new kinds of energy storage technologies, such as batteries and fuel cells, will emerge by 2025. In addition, much of the report focuses on how the U.S. will fare in a changing world. "By 2025, the U..S will find itself as one of a number of important actors on the world stage, albeit still the most powerful one," the NIC said.

  • Wakamaru(戲劇篇)

mitsubishi-wakamaru-actor.jpg
Actor robots take Japanese stage
First there were dancing robots, then house-sitting robots and now a new breed of acting robots is making its big debut on the Japanese stage.
The play, which had its premiere at Osaka University, is one of Japan's first robot-human theatre productions.
The machines were specially programmed to speak lines with human actors and move around the stage with them.
Playwright Oriza Hirata says the work raises questions about the relationship between humanity and technology.
The play, called Hataraku Watashi (I, Worker), is set in the near future.
It focuses on a young couple who own two housekeeping robots, one of which loses its motivation to work.
In the play, the robot complains that it has been forced into boring and demeaning jobs and enters into a discussion with the humans about its role in their lives.
So far, the play is only 20 minutes long but it is hoped to become a full-length production by 2010.
The Wakamaru robot is manufactured by Mitsubushi but the software to train it for the stage was developed over two months at the university.
The 1-m (3-ft) tall humanoid robot is best known as a mechanical house-sitter and secretary.
But soon they may be signing autographs or trying to roll away from paparazzi.
No word yet on whether they are pleased with the apparent job promotion.

article-1085059-02716d85000005dc-600_468x334.jpg
