ロボット産業マッチングフェアで毎回注目を集めるのは、地元北九州市の安川電機だ。今回、安川電機はサービスロボット・SmartPal Vを使った、「部屋の中の片付け」デモを披露した。デモには2台のSmartPal Vが登場。手がグローブ状のSmartPal V(女性の合成音声を使用)が案内役を務め、指を持つSmartPal V(こちらは男性の合成音声を使用)が部屋の片づけのデモを行なった。散らかった部屋にSmartPal Vが登場し、人間からの「ぬいぐるみを片付けてよ」の言葉の後で、SmartPalは行動を開始。小さなぬいぐるみをつかんで棚に置き、台をモップで拭いてから、大きなぬいぐるみを台の上に置いた。最後に掃除機で床を掃除してデモは終わりとなった。一般人がサービスロボットに期待する最大のことの1つは「命令するだけで家事を代わりにやってくれる」であり、部屋の片付けと掃除をロボットがやってくれる今回のデモは、ある意味でそれを実現したものだと言える。ただし、安川電機の松熊研司氏に話をお聞きしたところ、展示会用のデモとしての演出の部分もあるようだ。まずSmartPal自身は発話はしているが、人間の声は全く聞き取っておらず、人間の命令を聞いて動き出したわけではない(演出として、SmartPalが動き出す前にセリフを入れている)。また画像機能は使っておらず、床に置かれたぬいぐるみをSmartPalは見ていない。SmartPalは、予めぬいぐるみが置かれている場所とだいたいの大きさの情報を与えられており、距離センサーで壁や台との距離を測って自分がどこにいるのか判断し、ぬいぐるみの存在している場所を掴んでいる。なお、ぬいぐるみを掴んだかどうかは手のサーボモーターにかかる負荷の違いから判断しているそうだ。4月1日、2日に北九州市八幡東区のイノベーションギャラリーで、SmartPalのデモを披露した時は「床の物を拾って台に置く」だけだったので、今回のデモはそれから相当の進化を遂げている。やはり人の間で働くサービスロボットとして、SmartPalは最先端を行っているロボットの1つであることは間違いない。これからのSmartPal の計画についても話をお聞きしたが、次のSmartPal VIでは画像機能を使い、実際にぬいぐるみなどを自分で発見できるようにしたいとのこと。ただ、人間の音声認識に関しては「難しい」ようで、一案として携帯電話からのメールでの指令も考えられるかもしれないと語っていた。
